Social media for authors: build an audience before and after you launch
A practical approach to social media for authors: where to show up, what to post and how to turn followers into readers and email subscribers.
Writing the book is only half the work. The other half is helping the right readers find it. Social media can do that, but only if it is used with a plan rather than as a daily guilt trip. Here is a simple approach for authors.
Pick one or two platforms
You do not need to be everywhere. Choose the platforms where your readers already spend time and show up consistently there. For many authors that means Instagram and Facebook, with short video on TikTok or YouTube as a bonus.
Share the story behind the story
Readers connect with people. Share why you wrote the book, the characters, early sketches, behind-the-scenes moments and what you are learning. That is far more engaging than repeating “buy my book.”
Build a repeatable content rhythm
- Behind the scenes
- Excerpts and quotes (from your own work)
- Reader reactions and reviews
- Helpful tips related to your topic
- Clear calls to action
Send people to something you own
Algorithms change. Your email list and your website do not. Give every follower a reason to join your list, such as a free chapter, a printable or a devotional, and send them to a website that makes buying easy.
Plan the launch as a campaign
Start building anticipation weeks ahead, make launch week loud and keep going afterward. A simple calendar beats a burst of posts followed by silence.
